cardiac drugsSample Review: Apixaban in Comparison With Warfarin in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Valvular Heart Disease: Findings From the Apixaban for Reduction in Stroke and Other Thromboembolic Events in Atrial Fibrillation (ARISTOTLE) Trial

Amelia Carro. Instituto Corvilud, Asturias, Spain.
Valvular heart disease (VHD) is associated with a higher incidence of thromboembolic events, regardless of the underlying cardiac rhythm [1]. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a higher incidence of thromboembolic events in patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis or in patients with nonvalvular AF [2,3]. Warfarin is indicated for prevention of thromboembolic events in patients with mechanical prosthetic heart valves and in patients with AF and mitral stenosis [3-5].
