Ramires José Antonio Franchini was born on October 9, 1946, in San Paulo (SP). He graduated in medicine from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1972, performing specialized course in cardiology by the Faculty of Medicine (FM) USP in 1974. He earned a master’s degree in 1977 and a doctorate in 1983 at Faculty of Medicine, USP.
He served as a resident in clinical medicine in cardiology at HC-FMUSP, and appointed as tutor to the medical department of internal medicine from 1975 to 1977. In 1977, he was hired as assistant physician at the Heart Institute (Incor). In 1987 he was admitted as an associate professor at FM USP and in 1997, as professor of cardiology.
He was chairman of the board of Incor from 1999 to 2005, and since 1997 holds the position of Director of clinical cardiology division of Incor. At USP he has administrative activities with the university’s President,
acting as Chairman of Special working arrangements – Cert from 2006, and is also director of the health department at USP from 2007 to 2010.
As a cardiologist he was secretary of the Cardiology Society of the State of São Paulo from 1985 to 1987, and president from 1987 to 1989. From 1991 to 1993 he was president of the Heart Foundation of the Brazilian Society of Cardiology and president of that Society in the biennium 1995 to 1997.
At the international level he was Vice President of the Inter American Cardiology and the World Congress of Cardiology. He was a member of the commission organizing the Brazilian Congress of Cardiology in 1991, and President of the Congress in 2007.
He was the first physician outside the United States of America (USA) to write a chapter in the main book of internal medicine, “Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine “(2009), and the only guest outside the U.S. to write one more chapter in the important book of cardiology, “Braunwald’s Heart Disease” (2010).
He has been the editor of over 15 books and published over 395 articles in journals and 150 in international journals.
He received several titles and awards, including: Fellow of American College of Cardiology, Fellow of European Society of Cardiology, Academy of Chest Physicians and the American Society Angiology.
